Successful Golf Outing Benefits the Adult Day Center

Under sunny September skies, golfers enjoyed a challenging course with intermittent culinary treats and an Awards buffet afterwards at the Neshanic Valley Golf Club. They played to benefit the Adult Day Center of Somerset County, and their participation, along with that of sponsors, made the event very successful. Click here to see photos of the event.

New Logo for Adult Day Center

Have you noticed our new logo? It has been appearing on all of the new materials prepared for the Adult Day Center.

News and EventsThe design is based on an American Indian Rosetta design, invoking a rising sun, warmth, and nurturing. The tagline, "Sharing Your Care," has a wide range of meanings. "Your" refers to both the caregiver and the member. "Care" expresses concern and love, as well as physical care.

Artist Susan Ridley Cavaciuti provided the design with guidance from the ADC Board and staff. We believe it expresses the unique relationship the Adult Day Center has with its members and their families.

ADC Receives Partnership's Quality of Life Award

Before a filled ballroom at the Martinsville Inn in May, the Adult Day Center of Somerset County received the coveted Quality of Life Award from the Somerset County Business Partnership. The Center and its founder/leader, Jeff Macaulay, were recognized for over thirty years of social and medical day care service to disabled and elderly members of the community.

Most of the Center's 18 staff members, who contribute so lovingly to the organization's success, were in attendance (see photo below). "The staff itself is an amazing, compassionate group of people who know the best care comes from an understanding that those for whom we care really are just us and not strangers," said Executive Director Macaulay.

The Adult Day Center is currently running a capital campaign to construct a new building to provide enhanced service to an increased number of the county's frail elderly and disabled. For information about how you can help, contact Lynn Gaissert at 908-715-0068 or via e-mail at lgaissert@adultdaycenter.org.

Jeff Macaulay Named Award Winner

Jeff Macaulay, executive director of the Adult Day Center of Somerset County, has been named the 2005 recipient of the annual Shirley Collins Humanitarian Award. According to the 'Hearts of Gold' committee, which sponsors the award, he was selected based on his long-term commitment and passion for service to the mission of the Center, which serves about one hundred elderly and disabled people each week. Macaulay founded the Adult Day Center 30 years ago to provide day care for the frail elderly in a compassionate and respectful manner.

The award, a cobalt-blue, cut-crystal urn, is housed in a special display case in the lobby of the Somerset County Administration Building. Macaulay's name will be added to a plaque on the base of the urn. Former Adult Day Center trustees Vernon Noble and his late wife, Shirley, received the award in 2002.

"Hearts of Gold" is a group of business people dedicated to supporting grassroots initiatives by community organizations and individuals. Their awards for 2005 and 2006 have recently been announced.

Colorful Mural Painted by ADC Members

A large, colorful mural depicting a fantasyland of ocean, trees, flowers, and animals is a welcoming beacon in the lobby of the Adult Day Center. What's special about this compelling piece of art is that it was painted by those who come to the Center. Staff members also contributed.

The project was originated by creative art therapist Susan Ridley Cavaciuti. The goal the Center wanted was to create a relaxing, serene, and safe environment, according to Cavaciuti. The members who come to the Center each day agree that the goal has been achieved.

The Courier News ran a photo of the mural in their June 2 edition. A narrated photo essay, with Cavaciuti describing the project, appears on their website (click here to visit).

Talent Galore Shows Up at the Adult Day Center

Dancing, comedy, singing acts---they all contributed to a playful afternoon on June 28 at the Adult Day Center. Friends and family of Center staffers put on a variety show that would have made Mickey and Judy ("Let's put on a show") proud. The Courier News carried photos in their June 29 issue, and a narrated photo essay appears on their website (click here to visit).

Jeff Macaulay and Adult Day Center of Somerset County
Celebrate 30 Years

In March, Jeff Macaulay was given a surprise party at the Adult Day Center of Somerset County, an organization he founded 30 years ago and which he has headed ever since. In their March 22 edition, the Courier News devoted a full-page article to the story of Jeff and the Adult Day Center. It describes Jeff's vision as a 23-year-old just out of college that led to the creation of one of the first adult day care centers in the state, a vision of dignity and acceptance of the elderly that guides his leadership of the ADC today.
